US job growth through March was significantly weaker than previously thought

The US job market has been weaker than initially reported, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimating 911,000 fewer jobs for the year ending March 2025 than previously thought. If confirmed in February 2026, this would mark the largest annual revision on record. The change represents about 0.6% of total employment, well above the 0.2% average revision over the past decade.

The adjustment lowers average monthly job gains from 146,500 to about 70,500. Economists attribute the revision mainly to flaws in thebirth-death model,” which estimates job creation from new businesses. Other factors include weaker job creation at startups, sampling errors from declining survey responses, and adjustments for asylum-seekers and undocumented workers.

Trade, transportation, and utilities lost 226,000 jobs in the revision, while the information sector saw the largest percentage cut at 2.3% (67,000 jobs).

The revision process reflects how federal data evolves: BLS monthly surveys of 120,000 employers provide timely but less precise estimates, later benchmarked against the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, which uses tax filings but lags in time.

Final revisions will be published in early 2026.

Nearly 26 million Vietnamese students return to school for new academic year

Nearly 26 million students and 1.6 million teachers nationwide attended back-to-school ceremonies on Sept. 5, marking the start of the 2025-2026 academic year with significant policy shifts. The Ministry of Education and Training hosted a central celebration at Hanoi's National Convention Center, broadcast live and connected to 52,000 institutions. For the first time, all schools held a synchronized flag salute and national anthem ceremony, reflecting unity and the sector's responsibility in the new era.

This academic year is notable for the introduction of major reforms, including the Politburo's resolution on educational breakthroughs, the new Law on Teachers, and National Assembly resolutions on tuition support and exemptions across levels. These also cover universal preschool for children aged three to five and the development of schools in border and remote areas.

Local authorities and communities made special efforts to support students in disadvantaged regions, ensuring adequate facilities, books, and materials despite challenges. Schools were encouraged to create student-centered, memorable opening day activities.

The education sector's targets this year include a 99.7% enrollment rate for first graders, a 99.5% primary school completion rate, and raising teacher qualifications.

No phone signal, no crowds: relax by waterfall at Vietnam - Laos border

Deep in the Truong Son Mountains near the VietnamLaos border, Duong Cam Waterfall offers trekkers a remote escape with no phone signal and untouched scenery. Located at 700 meters in Kim Ngan Commune, Quang Tri Province, the three-tier cascade lies within the 500,000-hectare Dong ChauKhe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, home to rich biodiversity.

Reaching the falls requires an hour's drive from Dong Hoi along the Ho Chi Minh Highway and a three-kilometer trek through forest streams and mossy rocks. Each tier presents a different atmosphere: the lower pool is shaded and cool, the middle tier is the most challenging with slippery rocks requiring ropes, and the upper tier rewards hikers with panoramic forest views and the occasional rainbow mist.

Approved eco-tours launched in 2021 provide safety gear, guides, and porters. Trips can be one-day treks or two-day journeys with an overnight stay in Rum Ho Village, where visitors experience the BruVan Kieu ethnic culture through stilt house lodging, shared meals, and fireside gatherings. For travelers seeking raw nature and tranquility, Duong Cam Waterfall offers both adventure and retreat.

Girl Scouts adding a new cookie to the lineup

Girl Scouts of the USA will launch a new cookie calledExploremoresin January, inspired by Rocky Road flavors with chocolate, marshmallow, and toasted almond crème. It joins classics like Thin Mints and Samoas and will be sold online and at troop booths, with nearly 700,000 scouts participating in annual sales.

The group recently discontinued itsS'moresandToast-Yay!” cookies. Cookie prices, which vary by council, have risen over the years from $4–$5 in the mid-2010s to $6–$7 per box in 2023, though all proceeds remain local to support scouts' activities.

The financially struggling 113-year-old organization is also raising membership dues. Initially proposing an $85 fee, the National Council settled on increases to $45 in 2026 and $65 in 2027. Membership dues, the group's main revenue source, brought in $38 million in 2023 from nearly 2 million members, yet the organization still projects a $5.6 million loss for 2024.
