Hanoi is closing downtown schools on Aug. 21 and 27 to prepare for Vietnam's 80th National Day parade. The closures affect both public and private schools along parade routes to ensure student safety and ease traffic during large-scale rehearsals involving soldiers, vehicles, and performers.

Some schools in these areas will open facilities to the public for restroom use and heat relief during the celebrations, while suburban schools will continue normal operations. The school year for Hanoi's 2.3 million students begins around this time, with first, ninth, and twelfth graders starting on Aug. 22 and other grades a week later. This marks an increase of about 60,000 students compared to last year, making Hanoi's school system the second largest in Vietnam.

The school year's opening ceremony on Sept. 5 will coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Ministry of Education and Training and feature a live national broadcast with a flag-raising, national anthem, and a speech by Party General Secretary To Lam.

Malaysia welcomed 15.09 million visitors from other Southeast Asian countries in the first half of 2025, up 15.5% year-on-year. Singaporeans made up the largest share with 10.2 million arrivals, a 22.5% increase, followed by 2.1 million from Indonesia (up 8.2%) and a strong flow from Thailand.

The country has upgraded airport terminals and eased visa policies for China and India to enhance competitiveness. In Q1 2025, Malaysia topped the region with 10.1 million arrivals, ahead of Thailand (9.55 million), Vietnam (6 million), and Singapore (4.3 million).

Malaysia aims for 47 million international visitors in 2026, targeting markets in Central Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

Miss World Vietnam 2022 runner-up Nguyen Phuong Nhi made a rare public appearance in Hanoi on Aug. 19, 2025, attending a national groundbreaking ceremony with her fiancé, Pham Nhat Minh Hoang, son of Vietnam's richest billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong. Nhi, 23, appeared in a modest, elegant outfit, staying close to Hoang, 25, who leads an automobile company. The couple became engaged in January in her hometown Thanh Hoa under tight security, and since then, Nhi has stepped away from entertainment and social media, maintaining a low profile. Previously, Nhi represented Vietnam at the 2023 Miss International contest, placing in the top 15. Hoang, the second son of billionaire Vuong, has also largely kept out of the spotlight. Vuong's net worth is estimated at US$12.2 billion by Forbes.

The couple's only public appearance since their engagement was a February trip to Japan. Reports indicate they have known each other for many years, but wedding details remain undisclosed.

Pizza Hut is struggling with U.S. sales, posting seven straight quarters of declines, largely due to weak value messaging compared to rivals. To win back customers, it launched “Crafted Flatzz,” a thinner, crispier $5 personal pizza aimed at the lunch crowd. Executives hope this budget-friendly option can attract diners during midday, when sales lag behind evenings.

Meanwhile, Domino's and Papa John's are rebounding. Domino's saw a 3.4% same-store U.S. sales increase, driven by new items like the Parmesan Stuffed Crust, a revamped loyalty program, and a DoorDash delivery partnership. Papa John's reported a 1% sales increase with a 6% jump in pizza orders, boosted by its $6.99 “Papa Pairings” menu and renewed focus on core pizzas over sides.

Analysts say Pizza Hut trails because its promotions aren't as clear or compelling. In response, it has ramped up deals, extending $2 Personal Pizzas on Tuesdays and Wing Wednesdays. The new Flatzz, offered in five flavors, cost $5 until 5 pm and aim to boost lunch sales, which remain below pre-pandemic levels. CEO Aaron Powell said Pizza Hut sees lunch as an “area of significant opportunity,” especially for customers seeking single-serve options.

Industry experts believe Flatzz could improve Pizza Hut's value perception, but competition remains tough as consumers remain cautious with spending.

On Aug. 14, Pham Manh Ha in Hanoi unexpectedly received more than a dozen bank transfers marked “Cuba.” The funds were meant for the Vietnam Red Cross's campaign supporting Cuba but were mistakenly sent to his ABBank account, which shares the same number “2022” as the official MBBank account. By the next morning, he had over VND3 million (US$100) and contacted the bank to return the money. Ha also locked his account to prevent more errors.

The Red Cross launched the “65 Years of Vietnam-Cuba Solidarity” fundraising program on Aug. 13, set to run until Oct. 16. The campaign raised over VND65 billion in just 30 hours. It highlights the enduring friendship between Vietnam and Cuba, rooted in Cuba's support during Vietnam's war with the U.S. and sustained through strong trade and investment ties today.

A historic moment in bilateral relations was Fidel Castro's 1973 visit to Quang Tri, where he declared Cuba's willingness to shed blood for Vietnam, a statement that remains symbolic of the countries' solidarity.
