Southeast Asia's second largest economy targets Indian wedding market to boost tourism

Thailand is targeting India's lucrative wedding market throughThe Celebration with Care Wedding Planners Fam Trip & Trade Meet,” held September 4 at Marriott Resort & Spa, Nai Yang Beach. The event brought 20 Indian wedding planners together with 31 Thai tourism operators, including hotels, cruise companies, attractions, and airlines.

Indian weddings, known for large guest lists, multi-day festivities, and big budgets, have made Thailand a top destination thanks to luxury venues, visa-free entry, and planners experienced in Indian traditions. Delegates toured premier properties in Phuket, Koh Samui, and Bangkok, including Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui, Waldorf Astoria Bangkok, and others, along with wellness centers, beach activities, and upscale shopping.

TAT reported over 1,200 Indian weddings in Thailand between 2023 and 2024, each costing 1020 million THB, generating about 17 billion THB. From January to early September 2025, Thailand welcomed 1.63 million Indian tourists, up 15% year-on-year, making India its third-largest source market after China and Malaysia.

TAT is broadening outreach to families, millennials, luxury travelers, golfers, seniors, and new niches like self-drive tourists, wellness seekers, and adventure travelers, while aiming to attract more first-time Indian visitors to sustain long-term growth.

Vietnam is global leader in tourism growth

Vietnam recorded the world's highest year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals in the first half of 2025, alongside Japan, at 21%, according to the UN World Tourism Organization. Morocco followed with 19%, South Korea with 15%, and Malaysia and Indonesia with 9%.

Vietnam welcomed nearly 11 million international visitors from January to June, a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2019, before the pandemic. By August, arrivals had reached 14 million, up almost 22% year-on-year. Industry insiders credit the recovery to relaxed visa policies, expanded tourism campaigns, and new flight routes, which helped surpass pre-pandemic levels.

Globally, nearly 690 million tourists traveled abroad in the first half of 2025, 33 million more than in 2024. UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili praised the sector's resilience and contribution to local economies but stressed the need to ensure growth is sustainable and inclusive.

Thailand ranked first worldwide in weather modification

Thailand, ranked first globally in weather modification, is expanding its royal rainmaking program to combat drought and aid agriculture, according to Rachen Silparaya, head of the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation. The program has attracted international attention, though replication abroad is limited by technical demands and reliance on weather conditions such as humidity and cloud quality.

Rainmaking operations typically deploy three aircraft: one for cloud seeding, another to enhance cloud growth, and a third to trigger rainfall. Conducting all steps with a single aircraft in separate flights lowers success rates, while simultaneous operations improve results. Each plane requires a crew of at least seven.

Between February 23 and August 26, 2025, Thailand carried out 2,065 flights over 161 days, achieving rain in more than 95% of cases and easing drought on over 141 million rai of farmland across 63 provinces.

To boost efficiency, five dry ice plants are under construction in Tak, Phitsanulok, Khon Kaen, Buriram, and Phetchaburi. Each facility will produce one ton per hour, with completion expected by early October.

Scrutiny on Thai zoo grows after lion attack

A fatal incident at Safari World, one of Asia's largest open-air zoos, has renewed scrutiny over animal welfare and safety in Thailand. On Wednesday, 58-year-old zookeeper Jian Rangkarassamee was killed after lions mauled him when he stepped out of his vehicle. Autopsy results showed multiple deep wounds, a broken neck, and ruptured arteries.

Five lions, led by a 10-year-old male named Trump, have since been confined for monitoring, while the zoo closed its big cat section. Authorities found damaged fences, poor signage, and insufficient CCTV during inspections, noting the zoo's permit expired last year and is awaiting renewal.

Animal rights groups, including PETA and Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), urged stricter wildlife ownership laws. WFFT's Edwin Wiek warned the tragedy highlighted dangers of keeping lions privately, as nearly 500 are registered in Thai zoos, farms, cafés, and homes.

Safari World is already controversial for shows featuring orangutans forced to box and elephants performing tricks, with past allegations of orangutans being smuggled from Indonesia.

Officials said safety rules must improve, stressing that lions' natural instinctscannot be erased.” Zookeepers are advised to use defensive tools, work in pairs, and follow abuddy system.” The Department of National Parks will inspect other facilities and private owners to ensure compliance.

Other sections of Safari World remain open, though critics continue to call for reforms in Thailand's wildlife management and stronger protections against exploitation.
