What's drawing expats to Vietnam? Landing a teacher job tops the list

Vietnam has been ranked the 5th best country for expats worldwide in the InterNations' Expat Insider 2025 survey, driven largely by job opportunities, especially in education. About 22% of expats said they moved to Vietnam to apply for or find work locally, more than for adventure (13%) or international recruitment (7%). Education dominates expat employment, accounting for 42% of jobs, far ahead of sectors like logistics, consulting, and media.

The country's standout appeal is its affordability. Vietnam ranks 1st globally for personal finances for the fifth straight year, with nearly 90% of expats praising the cost of living and 87% saying their income is enough or more than enough to live comfortably. This makes Vietnam especially attractive for teachers and school administrators seeking good pay-to-cost ratios compared to other hubs.

In the Working Abroad Index, Vietnam places 11th, reflecting solid scores in job security, career prospects, work-life balance, and workplace culture. Though not the top globally, the environment is seen as supportive and flexible, especially for education professionals.

Globally, Vietnam trails only Panama, Colombia, Mexico, and Thailand, with China, UAE, Indonesia, Spain, and Malaysia rounding out the top 10. The survey, conducted in February 2025 with 10,085 expats across 172 nationalities, highlights Vietnam's growing role as a leading expat destination.

Russian tourist could be banned from Thailand for having sex on Phuket road

Thai police arrested a 23-year-old Russian man, identified as Georgii, after a viral video showed him having sex with a Thai woman on the back of a moving pickup truck in Phuket. He was detained at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sept. 25 while attempting to leave the country.

The 42-year-old Thai woman in the video admitted she was paid 1,000 baht (US$31) to participate in the recording, which Georgii allegedly created for his Russian online audience. Authorities said he has a history of producing explicit content for social media.

The clip, filmed by a passing motorist, sparked outrage online. Georgii now faces charges of committing an indecent act in public, which carries penalties of up to one year in prison, a fine of 20,000 baht, or both.

Phuket police chief Colonel Chatree Chukaew also recommended revoking Georgii's visa and adding him to a blacklist, preventing his return to Thailand.

Malaysian seafood noodle chain Hai Kah Lang to open first Singapore outlet

Hai Kah Lang, a Malaysian seafood noodle chain known for flavorful broths and fresh seafood, will open its first overseas outlet at Singapore's Funan mall by the end of September. Founder Steven Tan confirmed the launch, with CapitaLand also announcing the move.

The brand, founded in 2022 in Kuala Lumpur's Taman Cheras, has since expanded to eight outlets across Malaysia, including Johor Bahru and KLIA Terminal 2. Its flagship restaurant has earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for three consecutive years (20232025), recognizing its strong value-for-money offerings.

Hai Kah Lang's menu includes signature dishes like prawn noodles, crab meat porridge, and fish head noodles, as well as snacks such as Teochew oyster omelettes, stir-fried fish lips, and fried soft-shell crab.

The expansion comes amid rising costs and closures in Singapore's dining scene, but Tan expressed confidence that their food will appeal to local diners.

Hong Kong reopens after world's strongest cyclone Ragasa batters city

Hong Kong reopened its international airport, businesses, and some schools on Thursday after a 36-hour shutdown caused by Ragasa, the year's strongest tropical cyclone. The storm had earlier swept through the northern Philippines and Taiwan, killing 14, before hitting southern China's Yangjiang. In Hong Kong, more than 100 people were injured as authorities raised the maximum Typhoon Signal 10 on Wednesday.

By Thursday, Ragasa weakened into a tropical storm, with the observatory lowering the warning to Signal 3. While kindergartens and some schools remained closed, flights resumed from 6 a.m., with all three runways operating and over 1,000 flights expected to run at near-normal levels through Thursday and Friday.

The storm triggered flooding, giant waves, and seawater surges, including damage at the Fullerton hotel, though no injuries were reported. Authorities are repairing damaged infrastructure, clearing over 1,000 fallen trees, and addressing 85 flooding incidents. Before the storm, residents stocked up on essentials, causing shortages and rising vegetable prices.
