There was a rage': The moment Venus Williams' childhood coach saw her stratospheric potential

Venus Williams, 45, is set to compete in the 2025 US Open after receiving a wild card, more than 30 years since her professional debut. A seven-time grand slam singles champion and former world No. 1, Venus remains driven by her competitiveness, athleticism, and love for the game.

Her journey began in Compton under the guidance of her father, Richard Williams, and childhood coach Rick Macci, who instantly recognized her extraordinary determination. Venus turned pro at 14 in 1994, quickly showcasing her talent against top-ranked players. She went on to win multiple singles and doubles titles, including 14 grand slam doubles crowns with her sister Serena.

Her career faced major hurdles, notably Sjögren's syndrome in 2011 and recurring injuries, but Venus repeatedly fought back. Earlier this year, she returned after a 16-month break, stunning fans by becoming the oldest WTA Tour singles match winner since Martina Navratilova in 2004.

Experts credit her longevity to her athleticism, competitive spirit, and periodic breaks from tennis, which allowed her to pursue fashion, business, and philanthropy while keeping her body and mind refreshed.

Today, Venus continues to inspire younger players like 16-year-old Julieta Pareja, who also received a US Open wild card. While she may no longer be at her peak, herbulletproofmentality ensures she remains a dangerous competitor as she faces world No. 12 Karolína Muchová in the first round.

Venus' resilience and legacy cement her status as not just a champion, but a trailblazer who continues to shape tennis across generations.

Malaysia emerges as top Southeast Asia destination with surge in student applications

Malaysia has seen a 26% rise in international student applications over the past two years, driven by policy reforms, stronger university rankings, and post-study work opportunities. Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) now processes up to 15,000 applications a month, with cases often completed in 814 days. About 40 immigration officers focus on student visa approvals to streamline coordination with universities and agents.

In Q2, Malaysia received 12,469 applications from East Asia, 8,046 from South Asia, and nearly 5,000 from the Middle East & North Africa. China led with 10,947 applications, followed by Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, and India. Rising costs and stricter options in the U.S. and U.K. are pushing students toward Malaysia, which is boosted by its Malaysia Qualifications Framework and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency ensuring education quality.

Malaysia now leads Southeast Asia with 32 institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2026, while Sunway University was the world's most improved. Seven universities also ranked in the global top 500 in Times Higher Education's 2025 rankings.

Recent policies, including the Graduate Pass launched in December 2023, allow graduates from 32 countries to work in Malaysia for a year post-study. Centralized admissions and student arrival centers further enhance its appeal. With Chinese enrollments slowing elsewhere and Japan's weak yen, Malaysia is emerging as a competitive regional education hub.

Southeast Asia's second-largest economy offers free domestic flights for 200,000 foreign tourists

Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, plans to distribute 200,000 free domestic round-trip flight tickets to foreign tourists from September to November 2024 to stimulate tourism. The Tourism and Sports Ministry expects the scheme to generate 8.8 billion baht (US$243 million) in revenue from a 700-million-baht budget, pending cabinet approval.

Foreign travelers with an international flight ticket booked directly through airlines or online travel agents will be eligible for the promotion, which includes 20 kilograms of baggage. Six carriers will participate: Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Vietjet. Each one-way ticket will be subsidized by 1,750 baht, totaling 3,500 baht per round trip.

Minister Sorawong Thienthong emphasized the campaign targets foreigners who have not yet booked their tickets. As of August 17, Thailand recorded 20.8 million international arrivals, a 7% decline compared to last year, with China remaining the top source market at 2.9 million visitors.

The initiative resembles Japan Airlines' previous campaign, which offered free domestic flights to international tourists in an effort to promote regional destinations and alleviate overtourism in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Chinese tourist jailed for assaulting Malaysian immigration officer

A 31-year-old Chinese tourist, Fang Fuyuan, was sentenced to one month in jail and fined 2,000 Malaysian ringgit (US$473) for assaulting an immigration officer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The incident occurred on Aug. 13 at Terminal 1 when immigration officers stopped two Chinese adults and two children after finding no entry records for them. Fang became agitated, verbally abused a female officer, pulled off her headscarf, and slammed her head against a counter pillar, leaving the officer injured and requiring hospital treatment.

Despite attempts to calm her, Fang continued acting aggressively and was detained by police. She was later charged in Sepang Court on Aug. 18 and pleaded guilty, citing a misunderstanding and stress from traveling with children.

The court ruled that if Fang fails to pay the fine, she will serve an additional two months in prison.
