Vietnam's top economics university makes English a second language in landmark move

The National Economics University (NEU) in Hanoi has unveiled a bold plan to make English its second language by 2030a first for any university in Vietnam. As part of the initiative, 30% of all courses will be taught in English by 2028, expanding beyond the current scope of advanced and joint international programs.

By 2030, all NEU graduates will be required to achieve a minimum English level of B2, equivalent to IELTS 6.0, up from the current IELTS 5.5 for Vietnamese-taught programs.

To foster an English-speaking environment, the university will introduce bilingual documents, designate "English zones" on campus, hold academic events in English, and set specific hours when students and faculty are encouraged to speak English.

NEU says it's well-equipped to carry out the transition. Since 2017, it has accepted international English certificates for admissions, and by 2020 began evaluating SAT and ACT scores. The number of applicants with such credentials has grown from just 50 in 2017 to 25,000 in 2025.

Currently, over one-third of NEU's 25 programs are English-taught. The school plans to expand this to 35 programs within five years, increasing the share of English content from 50% to 65%.

Which is the world's busiest international route for July?

In July, the Hong KongTaipei route remained the world's busiest international air corridor, with 581,965 seats, matching its traffic from the same month last year, according to British aviation data firm OAG. For all of 2024 so far, the route leads globally with 6.8 million seats, marking a 48% increase from 2023, when it ranked third.

The high volume has intensified competition among the seven airlines operating direct flights on this two-hour route: China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Greater Bay Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Hong Kong Express, STARLUX Airlines, and EVA Air.

Chinese actor Li Mingde sentenced to 6 months in jail for drunken vandalism

Chinese actor Li Mingde has been sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay 200,000 yuan (US$27,776) in compensation after vandalizing a vehicle while intoxicated in Beijing earlier this year. The car's owner, screenwriter Yang Yang, confirmed the verdict online, expressing hope that Li would learn from the incident.

The vandalism occurred in February in Chaoyang District, where Li, reportedly frustrated by a car parked improperly, kicked the vehicle, tore off its emblems, and broke its mirrors. Although he initially admitted fault and agreed to pay for damages, Li later withdrew the offer after receiving a repair bill of 90,000 yuan and stopped communicating with Yang, prompting legal action.

Li, 29, known for roles in "Go Go Squid!" and "Lovely Us," has been inactive on social media since the incident. He also drew criticism earlier this year for publicly accusing a drama production of favoritism toward a co-star.

Who should be cautious when consuming honey?

Honey has many health benefits but poses risks for certain individuals and should be consumed with caution or avoided altogether in specific cases. Dr. Tran Thi Tra Phuong of Tam Anh General Hospital notes that while honey provides vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and supports energy, sleep, and skin health, it can be harmful for vulnerable groups.

Infants under one year old are at risk of botulism due to potential Clostridium botulinum spores in honey, as their digestive systems are too immature to neutralize these toxins. People with diabetes should also be cautious, as honey contains high sugar levels that can spike blood glucose. Individuals with pollen or bee product allergies may experience mild to severe reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Those with low blood pressure, IBS, liver disease, or obesity should also be wary. Honey can lower blood pressure further, worsen digestive symptoms due to its fructose content, strain the liver, and add excess calories that hinder weight control. Post-surgery patients may need to avoid it, as honey may slow blood clotting. Additionally, honey can interfere with certain medications, including blood thinners, antibiotics, and diabetes drugs.

Even for healthy individuals, Dr. Phuong advises moderationlimiting added sugars, including honey, to under 10% of daily calorie intake. She also recommends using raw honey, avoiding high heat, and not combining it with soy-based products or seafood to prevent unwanted chemical reactions and digestive issues.

Hanoi bakes in hottest August day ever recorded

On August 4, Hanoi experienced its hottest August day on record, reaching 40.3°C as a severe heatwave gripped northern Vietnam for the fourth consecutive day. Several districts in the capital, including Ha Dong, Ba Vi, and Son Tay, reported temperatures over 39°C, while Phu Ly in nearby Ninh Binh hit 40°C. In dense urban areas, the heat felt even more extreme due to the heat-retaining effects of concrete and asphalt.

Nguyen Van Huong of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting attributed the rare intensity of the heat to multiple overlapping weather systems. These included a strong western low-pressure system driving hot, dry air, prolonged clear skies amplifying solar radiation, and Foehn winds that further lowered humidity to 4752% at midday in Hanoi.

Other northern provinces, such as Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh, Nam Dinh, and Phu Tho, also suffered, with most recording 3638°C in official shelters, while real-world outdoor temperatures were even higher.

Relief is expected as a low-pressure trough brings thunderstorms to northern mountainous areas by the evening of August 4 and spreads across the north by August 56, significantly lowering temperatures.

July saw three distinct heatwaves in northern Vietnam, with temperatures 0.51.5°C above average. The current extreme heat is forecast to ease in mid-August, bringing conditions closer to seasonal norms.
