Plan smart for studying abroad or get lost in the wild goose chase

TheWild Geesephenomenon describes Asian families, originally in South Korea and now also in Vietnam and China, who separate so children can study abroad, often with mothers and children relocating while fathers stay to work. This model brings emotional and financial strain, especially when students are unprepared for the challenges of overseas life. Issues such as depression, anxiety, tight immigration policies, and rising education costs (up to $250,000 for a four-year degree) highlight the risks. A Wise survey found 67% of students faced significant budget shortfalls abroad.

In response, some parents are now choosing international programs offered in Vietnam, such as British University Vietnam (BUV). BUV delivers U.K.-standard degrees at 70% lower cost, with classes taught entirely in English by international faculty. Students benefit from an international environment while staying near family and culture. BUV also supports global pathways through partnerships with over 70 universities worldwide, offering semester exchanges, transfers, or postgraduate study.

BUV eases the study-abroad process with personalized learning paths, reduced paperwork, a 95% international transfer success rate, and guaranteed scholarship support. The university is Vietnam's first to receive a 5-star QS rating and global QAA accreditation. With a strong focus on blending theory and practice, BUV boasts a 100% employment or further study rate within three months of graduation.

Taiwanese singer Waa Wei, 42, confirms relationship with 21-year-old influencer

Taiwanese singer Waa Wei's agency confirmed her relationship with actor Ian Chen after photos of the couple holding hands at an art exhibition went viral. The agency clarified that both were single before dating and denied rumors that Wei was involved in breaking up any prior relationship. This statement followed a post by Chen's ex-girlfriend, influencer Raewyn Teng, who hinted at emotional distress caused by Wei's posts featuring Chen. Teng later retracted her message, saying she had acted out of emotion and asked people to be kind.

Wei, known for her work with indie band Natural Q and her solo career since 2007, has won two Golden Melody Awards for Best Female Mandarin Singer. She divorced actor Christopher Lung in 2022 after four years of marriage; they share a six-year-old son.

Ethnic woman's homestay, village go national in Vietnam after reality TV spotlight

Thong, a 39-year-old Tay ethnic woman in northern Vietnam, became a social media sensation after her homestay, Ban Lien Pine, was featured in a reality TV show. Located in a remote village in Lao Cai Province, her homestay was fully booked for three consecutive months after the show's broadcast. Thong and her husband started the business in 2019 as part of a rural tourism initiative that trained locals in hospitality and provided loans.

Her homestay offers authentic cultural experiences, including rice farming, tea picking, and weaving, with activities integrated into her family's daily life. Despite increased attention, Thong maintains a sustainable schedulethree days hosting, two days restingand avoids overbooking. When overwhelmed, she refers visitors to other homestays in the village, ensuring shared economic benefits.

Guests appreciate her cooking, music skills, and hands-on tours. Prices are affordable, and experiences are flexible but safe, with waivers signed beforehand. Tourism has brought financial stability and cultural preservation, but Thong still farms daily and emphasizes community involvement. She believes sustainable tourism must stay true to local life and values.

Social Security says it will no longer send paper checks. What you need to know

Starting September 30, 2025, the Trump administration will stop issuing paper Social Security checks, affecting about 0.8% of beneficiaries (roughly 500,000 people). Recipients must switch to direct deposit or a prepaid Direct Express debit card if they lack a bank account. This change aligns with Trump's executive order to fully modernize federal payments and reduce fraud risks, as paper checks are increasingly targeted. The Treasury Department notes electronic payments are also more cost-effectiveless than 15 cents versus 50 cents per check.

Exceptions will be allowed in limited cases. Though the Social Security Administration hasn't publicly confirmed details, Sen. Elizabeth Warren stated that Commissioner Frank Bisignano assured her some beneficiaries who truly need paper checks will still receive them. Waivers may be granted under specific circumstances: mental impairment, lack of electronic infrastructure in remote areas, or being age 90 or older. Recipients needing a waiver can call 1-855-290-1545 or submit a form via mail.
