Modern Dining Etiquette
Hi.
I'm Chloe Malle. I'm the Social Editor at Vogue.
Today we 're going to talk about modern etiquette because believe it or not, you can still be polite in 2015.
If you absolutely feel compelled to take a selfie, do so at the bar before your dinner.
Then you can join your party and put the phone away.
Tardiness can be a hot topic.
If you 're meeting friends, a few minutes is fine, they 'll understand.
If you 're meeting someone for work, just be on time.
Thank you very much.
If you 're meeting the boss, definitely be early.
I like to hope that chivalry isn't dead.
I practically weep from gratitude every time a man stands up when I approach a table.
I never know how many times to kiss people.
Is it once, is it twice? Is it a hug? Is it a handshake?
I think the only rule is, know your audience.
First things first, your napkin must remain on your lap.
Now let's go over the table settings.
Butter knife, salad fork, second course fork, soup spoon, meat or second course knife, first course knife.
Thank you.
It 's a greatly held misconception that you should wait until everyone has gotten their food to begin eating.
In fact, once two people have been served, feel free to dig in.
If you 're wondering about whether to get two courses,
I always think it's best to follow the lead of the person who extended the invitation.
That often goes for paying the bill as well.
Thank you.
It's always helpful when you 've finished your food to put your knife and fork side by side at an angle.
Don't be too prissy, you don't want your finger all curled up.
You're not in Jane Austen, rein it in.
If you have to excuse yourself to go to the ladies' room, the best time is at the end of the meal,
but it's not a Depends commercial, so in between courses is fine as well.
I 'll be right back.
Texting or emailing are only appropriate when your dinner partner has excused themselves to go to the bathroom.
The rule used to be, " Leave a little for lady manners ".
But, I don't think that's very modern.
