Close Encounter with a Moose
So one of my favorite stories from all of my explorations happened on the Appalachian Trail.
I had a dog with me named Kaya and about two o'clock in the morning, I 'm sleeping out under the stars, cowboy camping,
and I feel Kaya licking my face. I start to then hear what I think is Kaya throwing up, making the sound of a dog puking.
I open up my eye and there is a moose nostril three inches from my face.
So I make this little like " uh " and it rears up on both sides and slammed down on both sides of my head,
centimeters away from either side of my head. It leaped over my head and went and clotheslined my friend Rory 's hammock.
She plummeted to the ground. My buddy Rooster runs out of his tent, he 's holding himself and saying, " big moose, big moose, big moose."
We kept hearing that rutting sound all night, the sound of the dog throwing up was the male rut.
It's the, the " uh, uh "... it was rutting season or mating season and so I don't know if it thought I was a female moose,
because of how I smelled at that point. It was pretty wild.
