Educating filmmakers in AI era: blending human intuition with technological innovation

While AI is rapidly transforming the film industry by streamlining production and enabling digital creativity, experts argue that it still cannot replicate the emotional depth and human connection essential to cinema. AI tools are now used for cost-cutting and efficiency, with studios like Marvel experimenting with AI-generated visuals. AI-assisted short films are also emerging globally, including at festivals in Japan.

However, filmmakers like James Cameron and educators such as Dr. Paul D.J. Moody at British University Vietnam (BUV) emphasize that storytelling rooted in empathy, emotion, and human intuition remains irreplaceable. Moody encourages aspiring filmmakers to view AI as a toolnot a crutchhighlighting the need for a balance between creativity and tech skills.

BUV, in partnership with the U.K.'s Arts University Bournemouth, offers a Film & Media Production program that blends technical training with a strong focus on storytelling, critical thinking, and creative ownership. With modern facilities, hands-on workshops, and industry internships, BUV prepares students to navigate the evolving media landscape with both emotional intelligence and digital fluency.

World's 'most favorite destination' eyes 40 million foreign visitors in 2025

Japan is on track to welcome over 40 million international visitors by the end of 2025, driven by global events, a weak yen, and rich travel experiences. In the first half of the year alone, over 28.5 million travelers visited Japan, with June marking the sixth straight month of over 3 million arrivals, a 21% increase from 2024.

China remained the top source of tourists in June (797,900 visitors), followed by South Korea (729,800), both showing over 20% year-on-year growth. Visitor numbers from the U.S., Canada, and Singapore also reached new highs.

Key factors behind the tourism surge include the April launch of World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan's seasonal appeallike cherry blossomsand eased travel restrictions. The weakened yen has further made Japan an attractive destination.

Tourist Japan predicts the country will surpass 40 million international arrivals this year, topping last year's 36.8 million. Japan was also voted the world's most favorite destination by Condé Nast Traveler readers in 2024.

Asia's fourth-largest economy to offer visa-free entry to Chinese tourists from late September

South Korea will allow visa-free entry for Chinese tourist groups from September 29, 2025, to June 2026 to boost tourism ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The move follows China's earlier decision to exempt South Koreans and others from visas and reflects hopes for improved bilateral ties under President Lee Jae-myung.

Scheduled just before China's October holiday, the policy aims to stimulate South Korea's economy amid a tourism recovery. The APEC summit, hosted in Gyeongju from October 31 to November 1, may also see talks between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.

1-in-20 Hospital Patients Spend 24 Hours Waiting in Emergency Departments

A new University of Michigan study warns that emergency department (ED) wait times for hospital admissions, known as "boarding," have worsened nationwide. As of 2024, 1 in 20 Americans admitted via the ED wait over 24 hours for a hospital bed, with more than 25% waiting over 4 hours even in non-peak months. The trend, which worsened during the pandemic, shows no sign of improvement.

Boarding affects patients with serious conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and infections, delaying care and increasing risks of medical errors. It also strains ED capacity, limiting access for incoming patients. The worst case recorded was in January 2022, when 40% waited over 4 hours and 6% over 24 hours. Vulnerable populationsincluding older adults, non-English speakers, and Black patientsare disproportionately affected.

The study analyzed data from 46 million ED visits at 1,500 hospitals nationwide. Researchers stress that insufficient inpatient capacity is the primary cause. Proposed solutions include redistributing surgical schedules, improving discharge processes, enhancing regional data sharing, and supporting rural hospitals.

A new 264-bed hospital is being built by Michigan Medicine to address capacity, and House Bill 2936the "Addressing Boarding and Crowding in the Emergency Department Act of 2025"—is expected to tackle the issue through legislation.

Arthritis Treatment Reduces Painful Flare-Ups, Slows Disease

Researchers have developed a new nanoparticle-based therapy that may prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in at-risk individuals and reduce the severity and frequency of flare-ups in patients. RA is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks joint tissue, affecting around 1.5 million people in the U.S.

Led by Dr. Nunzio Bottini and Professor Nisarg Shah, the study focused on calcitriol-loaded nanoparticles (CLNP), enhanced with a protein fragment from aggrecan, a joint protein mistakenly targeted in RA. These modified nanoparticles (Agg-CLNP) regulate dendritic cells, key players in initiating inflammation and RA flares.

In lab tests, Agg-CLNP reduced immune response in human blood samples. In mice, it delayed RA onset and reduced joint damage, especially when combined with existing drugs like abatacept or corticosteroids. However, it showed limited effect if used after RA symptoms had already appeared.

This marks the first potential treatment aimed at preventing RA flares and offers promise for at-risk patients. The therapy, once optimized and licensed, could be tailored to individual immune profiles for greater effectiveness. Further studies are needed before it can enter clinical use.
