BUV ranks among Vietnam's top 5 universities for international students

EduOpinions has ranked British University Vietnam (BUV) among the top five universities in Vietnam for international students, making it the only international university on the list. Students praised its teaching quality, research standards, facilities, and especially the welcoming environment. Verified reviews cited vibrant student life, practical learning, and strong support services as standout features.

BUV, modeled on accredited British education, is the first Vietnamese university with a 5-star QS rating, offering both full-time programs and short-term exchanges. Its Culture Immersion and Work Experience Programs allow students to combine study with cultural and professional opportunities in Vietnam, recently voted Asia's Leading Destination 2024.

Testimonials from students in Germany, the U.K., and China highlighted BUV's modern campus, practical teaching, and the friendliness of Vietnamese peers and lecturers. Many emphasized how cultural openness made integration easier.

The school also helps international students launch careers. For example, Britney Yuvonne Nguyen, a U.K. student, interned at Vietnam's Elite Group and later secured a part-time role at its New York office.

Vietnam currently hosts 22,000 foreign students, with affordable costs, safe environments, and cultural diversity making it an emerging education hub. BUV embodies this shift, reinforcing Vietnam's appeal as a global study destination while aiming to grow its international student population further.

New York food magazine names Singapore best city for cheap eats

A report by Chef's Pencil ranked Singapore as the world's most affordable city forcheap eats, with a casual meal costing about US$9.30, only 0.2% of the average monthly salary of US$4,642. On this basis, a resident could theoretically afford 500 budget meals per month.

Other top affordable cities include Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Doha, Seoul, and Shanghai, reflecting Asia's dominance in low-cost dining relative to wages.

However, tourists often disagree. Many visitors, especially from the U.S. and China, complained that Singapore food feels expensive, with some saying it isnot for the pooror that prices are high for the quality offered. This contrast highlights the gap between affordability for locals and perceptions among travelers.

Cooking methods that may damage kidney health

Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung from the National Institute of Nutrition explained that braised dishes pose the most risk to kidney health compared to stir-frying, boiling, or steaming. Because braised foods are slow-cooked, they absorb large amounts of seasonings. While spices like garlic or ginger are safe, excessive salt, fish sauce, or soy sauce can cause sodium overload, which raises blood pressure, strains the kidneys, and increases risks of chronic disease.

Braised dishes often include added sugar, which is difficult to track and may contribute to obesity, hypertension, liver damage, and kidney issues. By contrast, boiling and steaming are healthier since they require little seasoning, though many find them bland. The WHO and Vietnam's Ministry of Health recommend only 45 grams of salt daily.

Hung advised limiting salt, sugar, and oil, and increasing vegetable intake. People with kidney disease, obesity, diabetes, or cardiovascular problems should pay particular attention to diet management.

Schools shut, flights canceled, fresh food sold out as Super Typhoon Ragasa nears Hong Kong

Hong Kong shut schools and canceled over 500 flights Tuesday as Super Typhoon Ragasa, with winds of 230 kph, threatened to be one of the city's most destructive storms in recent history. Authorities warned it could rival Typhoons Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018), which caused massive damage. Shenzhen evacuated 400,000 residents, while other Guangdong cities also shut schools and businesses.

Ragasa had already struck the northern Philippines, killing at least one person in a landslide, destroying homes, and forcing thousands into shelters. Hong Kong's 7.5 million residents rushed to markets, emptying shelves of essentials, while some businesses piled sandbags to protect against flooding. Officials issued the T8 warning signal, closing businesses and suspending most public transport.

Hong Kong International Airport will remain open but warned of severe disruptions. The Hong Kong Jockey Club canceled horse racing, while classes were suspended for two days. Stock markets, which now remain open during typhoons, are under close monitoring.

Authorities opened 46 shelters and warned low-lying areas of flood risk. Ragasa, named after the Filipino word forrapid motion,” is expected to pass closest to Hong Kong and Macau Wednesday morning before weakening as it moves inland. Scientists link increasingly powerful storms like Ragasa to climate change.
