South Korea becomes latest country to ban phones in classrooms

South Korea has passed a nationwide law banning mobile phones in school classrooms, set to take effect in March next year. The measure targets growing concerns over smartphone addiction among students in one of the world's most connected nations. Exceptions will allow use for educational purposes or to support students with disabilities or special needs.

The Education Ministry stated that the law aims to safeguard students' right to learn while supporting teachers. Lawmakers, including the bill's sponsor Cho Jung-hun of the opposition People Power Party, said the legislation helps reduce social conflict by setting clear rules for device use in schools.

The National Human Rights Commission, which previously opposed restrictions, shifted its stance, recognizing that smartphones can harm students' learning and emotional health. However, critics, including the left-wing Jinbo Party, argue the law infringes on students' digital rights and prevents them from developing responsibility in navigating the digital world.

South Korea now joins countries such as Australia and the Netherlands in restricting student screen time, reflecting a global trend to balance education with the challenges of digital dependence.

World's 'most favorite destination' attracts nearly 1 million Chinese tourists in July

Japan welcomed 974,500 Chinese visitors in July, a 25.5% rise from last year, making up 30% of all foreign arrivals that month. The growth was driven by pent-up demand for short-haul travel after pandemic restrictions, competitive flight and package prices, and strong interest in Japanese culture.

From January to July 2025, mainland Chinese tourists accounted for 23% of Japan's inbound travel. While this is below the pre-pandemic share of 30% in 2019, it reflects recovery and diversification compared to 2024's 19%.

Overall, Japan recorded 24.9 million foreign arrivals in the first seven months of 2025, up 18.4% year-on-year. With this momentum, annual inbound tourism could surpass 40 million visitors, exceeding the 36.8 million logged in 2024.

Gangnam Style' singer Psy under investigation

South Korean singer Psy, famed for his 2012 global hitGangnam Style,” is being investigated for allegedly receiving prescriptions for controlled substances without undergoing in-person medical checkups. Police suspect he obtained Xanax, used for anxiety, and Stilnox, a sleeping aid, from a Seoul hospital between 2022 and recently, with his manager often collecting the drugs on his behalf. Both medications are tightly regulated due to their addictive potential.

Authorities have detained the doctor who prescribed the drugs and searched the hospital for Psy's medical records. The doctor has denied wrongdoing, claiming the treatment was conducted remotely.

Psy's management company, P NATION, confirmed his chronic sleep disorder diagnosis and admitted he has been prescribed sleeping medication under medical supervision. They denied procedural violations but acknowledged that others had occasionally collected his medication. The company apologized for the controversy while stressing that Psy's prescriptions were monitored by medical professionals.

Psy, whose real name is Park Jae Sang, rose to international stardom withGangnam Style,” the first video to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube, holding the platform's top spot for nearly five years. The investigation is ongoing.

Vietnamese broken rice joins menu of Japan's fast-food giant Matsuya

Japanese fast-food chain Matsuya has officially introducedVietnamese-style broken rice with porkacross its more than 1,100 outlets nationwide, marking a breakthrough for Vietnamese cuisine in Japan. The launch event took place on Aug. 26 at Matsuya's Roppongi branch in Tokyo, attended by Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu, who presented the dish to local media.

Matsuya representative Aya Aoki said the company first discovered broken rice during surveys in Vietnam and was impressed by its flavor. A pilot program in April 2025 received strong customer approval, prompting the chain to expand the dish nationwide.

A highlight of the menu is that the broken rice will be served with authentic Vietnamese fish sauce, the first time a major Japanese restaurant chain has used the condiment. To ensure supply, 10 tonnes of fish sauce were imported directly from Vietnam.

Vietnamese Trade Counsellor Ta Duc Minh emphasized that this collaboration reflects the recognized quality of Vietnamese products and could open the door for more exports, including rice, coffee, fruits, and processed foods, while also deepening VietnamJapan trade relations.

From Koeln to Hanoi: German man's deep love for Vietnam's parades

Jean Paul, a 42-year-old man from Germany, has visited Vietnam 15 times in the past 16 years, four of them to attend military parades. He plans to witness his fifth parade on Sept. 2, 2025, for Vietnam's 80th National Day. His fascination began in 2008 after his first trip, when he fell in love with Vietnam's history, culture, landscapes, and patriotism. At home, he keeps Vietnamese flags, parade photos, and even a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh.

Paul's first parade experience was in 2015 during the 70th National Day, where the overwhelming pride of the Vietnamese people deeply moved him. Since then, he has attended events such as the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu, the 50th Reunification Day in Ho Chi Minh City, and Hai Phong's liberation. He has documented veterans, parades, and local celebrations, sometimes seeing his photos published in Vietnamese media.

To him, Vietnam's unity contrasts with Europe's weaker sense of collective pride. His admiration also extends into his personal life: he married a Vietnamese woman, Nguyen Kim Yen, in 2022, who was touched by his love for her homeland.

As he prepares for the 80th National Day parade, Paul remains determined to capture the event, though his efforts to attend as an accredited reporter were unsuccessful. For him, photographing Vietnam's parades is more than a hobbyit is preserving the spirit, emotion, and pride of a country he now considers his second home.
