Keurig Dr Pepper will buy a Dutch coffee group for over $18 billion and split into two companies

Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) will acquire Dutch coffee giant JDE Peet's, owner of Douwe Egberts, Kenco, and Peet's Coffee, for $18.4 billion (€15.7 billion), paying31.85 per share in cash. Following the deal, KDP will split into two listed companies: Beverage Co., focused on soft drinks, and Global Coffee Co., a coffee powerhouse with around $16 billion in expected annual sales across 100+ countries.

The announcement sent JDE Peet's shares soaring 17.48% in Amsterdam, their best day on record, while KDP's stock plunged 11.48%, its worst drop since March 2020. Analysts noted the market's usual skepticism toward large acquisitions but highlighted the long-term value of separating coffee and beverage operations.

CEO Tim Cofer will lead Beverage Co., while KDP's CFO Sudhanshu Priyadarshi will become CEO of Global Coffee Co., which will emerge as the world's largest standalone coffee business.

The move comes amid rising coffee demand in the U.S., the world's biggest coffee importer, where Americans consume 516 million cups daily. However, prices have nearly doubled in five years due to climate change, global conflicts, Trump-era tariffs, and growing consumption.

Keurig Dr Pepper, originally formed in 2018 through the merger of Keurig Green Mountain and Dr Pepper Snapple, now seeks to capitalize on both strong beverage demand and resilience in the coffee category by creating two specialized global leaders.

Central Vietnam bans vessels from going to sea as Storm Kajiki approaches

Central Vietnam is bracing for Storm Kajiki, the fifth storm in the East Sea this year, set to hit between Thanh Hoa and Hue on Aug. 25 with winds possibly reaching levels 1112 and gusts up to level 15. Provinces have banned vessels from sailing starting Aug. 24, with thousands of fishing boats and workers instructed to return to shore. In Quang Tri, 8,725 vessels with nearly 24,200 workers are affected, while border guards continue urging offshore boats to take shelter. Similar bans and safety measures were enforced in Nghe An, where over 3,000 boats and 13,200 workers have been accounted for, and rescue forces remain on standby.

Quang Ngai suspended Sa KyLy Son ferries at strong wind levels and ordered boats near Hoang Sa to evacuate or shelter. Mountain districts are monitoring landslide-prone areas, preparing relocations. Hue city rushed to harvest crops and recalled fishing boats, while small boats were moved inland.

National ministries have urged 12 provinces to reinforce dykes, reservoirs, and irrigation systems in anticipation of flooding and landslides. Local authorities stressed the "four on-the-spot" principle for disaster response, with troops, vehicles, and rescue equipment ready.

Residents in coastal and low-lying areas have been warned to stay alert, follow evacuation orders, and prepare for severe rainfall, floods, and landslides as Kajiki approaches.
