Canada's international student decline deepens amid policy fallout

Canada's international student numbers are falling sharply as study permit approvals in 2024 dropped to 267,890, down 48% from 2023 and nearly 100,000 below the federal cap target of 360,000. The decline follows a two-year cap introduced in January 2024 to reduce approvals by 35%. By the end of 2024, Canada hosted about 997,820 international students, a 4% drop from the previous year's record.

Critics argue the cap has been overly restrictive, harming sectors such as official languages education. Approval rates for key markets have plummeted, with Indian students' approval rate falling from 81% in 2024 to 28% in January 2025, while Algeria and Ghana saw rates of just 6% and 5%. Only Bangladesh showed slight improvement.

Applications also fell 35% between 2023 and 2024, signaling reduced interest amid uncertainty over post-graduate work permits, dependents, and master's program rules. Stricter financial requirements introduced in January 2024doubling the proof-of-funds threshold to CA$20,635are also seen as a deterrent. Early 2025 data indicates the downward trend is accelerating.

Southeast Asia's second largest economy receives over 19 million tourists in 7 months

Thailand recorded 19.57 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first seven months of 2025, down 6.56% year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. China returned as the top source market with 2.73 million visitors.

The Finance Ministry recently lowered its 2025 forecast from 36.5 million to 34.5 million visitors, still well below the 2019 pre-pandemic record of nearly 40 million. The Tourism Authority of Thailand noted that reaching its target of 1 million visitors from the Middle East and Africa will be difficult due to geopolitical conflicts, though new flight routes this winter may offer growth opportunities.

United Airlines grounds all flights at US airports over technology glitch

On Aug. 6, United Airlines temporarily grounded its mainline flights at U.S. airports due to a technology issue affecting its weight calculation system. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stops at major United hubs, including Newark, Denver, Houston, and Chicago.

By 9:19 p.m. Eastern Time, FlightRadar24 reported that the issue had been resolved and flights were departing again. However, delays persisted, with FlightAware data showing 870 United flightsabout 28% of its scheduledelayed that day.

This incident follows similar disruptions in the airline industry, including Alaska Airlines grounding all flights in April 2024 due to problems with its weight and balance system.

Map Shows States With Highest Rates of Death by Heart Disease

CDC data shows that in 2022, the U.S. states with the highest age-adjusted heart disease death rates were Oklahoma (257 per 100,000), Mississippi (248), and Alabama (234). Other states with high ratesbetween 191.5 and 229.8 per 100,000include Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The lowest rates were recorded in Minnesota, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, Colorado, and New Jersey.

Heart disease, most commonly artery disease, can reduce blood flow to the heart and cause heart attacks if untreated. Symptoms vary depending on the condition and may include chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, and swelling in the legs or abdomen.

Key risk factors are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking, with nearly half of Americans having at least one. Additional risks include diabetes, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Prevention involves maintaining a healthy lifestyleeating nutrient-rich foods, exercising regularly, managing weight, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking or heavy drinking. Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, while children should get an hour daily. Managing conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes through medical care and lifestyle changes is also essential.

Scientists Have a Warning For People Who Drink Coffee at Night

A University of Texas at El Paso study, published in iScience, suggests that drinking coffee at night may trigger impulsive behavior, potentially posing risks for late-shift workers. Researchers used fruit flies, chosen for their genetic and neural similarities to humans, to test caffeine's effects at different times of day and under varying conditions, including sleep deprivation.

Flies given caffeine at night were less able to suppress movement when exposed to strong airflow, showing reckless, impulsive behavior such as flying despite aversive conditions. This effect did not occur in flies that consumed caffeine during the day. Female flies displayed greater nighttime caffeine-related impulsivity than males, though the difference appeared unrelated to estrogen, indicating other genetic or physiological causes.

Lead author Erick Saldes and his team caution that the findings may have implications for professions like healthcare and the military, where night workers often rely on caffeine to stay alert.
