British University Vietnam (BUV) hosted Career Day SoCCI 2025, showcasing student portfolios from its School of Communications and Creative Industries. The event gathered leading media, design, and animation companies like M-N Associates, Booncha Studio, DeeDee Animation Studio, Hands Collective, and Le Bros.
Students from Contemporary Creative Practice and Professional Communication programs presented projects as part of the Summer Show 2025's Spectrum exhibition. Employers praised both creativity and professionalism, citing standout works such as Tu Linh by Nguyen Thu Phuong and Han Fusion by Nguyen Tran Phuong Linh.
Industry leaders highlighted BUV students' research, attention to detail, and ability to manage projects like professional agencies. Hands Collective's CEO likened the experience to “finding real gold,” while Booncha Studio's co-founder emphasized their individuality and readiness for real-world demands.
Executives also stressed adaptability. M-N Associates' co-founder urged students to keep pace with evolving trends to remain competitive. Some students even received job offers during the event, underscoring its impact.
For employers, the day offered early access to emerging talent. Le Bros' HR head noted that such platforms help align student skills with industry needs.
According to Dr. Paul D.J. Moody, Head of SoCCI, this was the school's first dedicated career day and will now become a regular feature, complementing BUV's extensive internships and supporting graduate employability in communications and creative industries.
Hanoi has mandated that all schools collect students' mobile phones at the start of the day and return them only after classes end, aiming to curb distractions. The rule, announced by Education Department Director Tran The Cuong on Aug. 28, follows parental complaints about students gaming and using phones despite earlier guidelines.
Students may use phones for study if teachers approve, but lessons are encouraged to avoid device dependence. In urgent cases, communication must go through teachers or school hotlines. Schools are also required to publicize hotlines for complaints, while teachers and parents share responsibility for monitoring technology use.
The move aligns with global trends. Several European countries, including France, Denmark, and Belgium, have tightened restrictions, while South Korea will enforce a nationwide classroom ban in 2025. Ho Chi Minh City is studying a similar ban that could apply even during recess. UNESCO has also called for prohibitions, warning that phones harm learning quality and expose students to risks like cyberbullying.
Indonesia will tighten tourist quotas for Padar Island in Komodo National Park to prevent overcrowding and protect the ecosystem, according to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni. While acknowledging tourism's economic benefits, he stressed that it must not harm the environment. Recent surges in visitors have raised concerns, prompting measures such as installing fences, signboards, and coordinating with volunteers to improve safety around popular photo spots.
The government is also reviewing a controversial plan by PT Komodo Wildlife Ecotourism to build tourism facilities, including villas, within the park. Antoni emphasized no construction has begun, as the project still requires UNESCO review and public consultation. He assured that if approved, development would not damage the Komodo dragon's habitat.
Local residents and business owners have opposed the project, fearing environmental harm and threats to their livelihoods. The Komodo dragon, a three-meter-long venomous lizard unique to Indonesia, remains under strict protection as an endangered species and is central to the country's ecotourism appeal.
Miss World Vietnam 2022 second runner-up Phuong Nhi appeared with her fiancé, Pham Nhat Minh Hoang — son of billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong — and his family at the opening of the Exhibition of 80 Years National Achievements. Dressed in a white ao dai with a national flag scarf, she matched her in-laws' attire and arrived early under tight security. She sat with relatives behind her mother-in-law, while Vuong, Hoang, and his brother sat separately.
Nhi has accompanied the family at other major events this year, including the Aug. 19 inauguration of 250 projects for the 80th National Day and Vingroup's shareholders' meeting. Since her January engagement, she has withdrawn from the entertainment industry, closing her social media and limiting public appearances.
Previously active in modeling and commercials, Nhi represented Vietnam at Miss International 2023 in Japan. Hoang, 25, heads an automobile company and is Vuong's second son. Their engagement ceremony in Thanh Hoa was held under strict security, with wedding details still undisclosed. Their first public outing as a couple was a trip to Japan in February, though they are said to have known each other for years.
South Korean fast-food chain Lotteria will open its first Singapore outlet in February 2026, partnering with Katrina Group. While the location is not yet disclosed, the brand plans to serve its signature Korean-style burgers along with seasonal specials adapted to local tastes.
Founded in 1979, Lotteria runs over 1,600 outlets across seven countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar, and is set to enter Malaysia later this year with a five-year plan for 30 outlets.
Its Singapore launch comes amid a struggling F&B sector, where rising costs and weaker travel spending have forced many closures. In 2024, 3,047 food businesses shut down — the highest since 2005 — and Michelin-starred restaurants have been among the casualties. In 2025, closures have risen to an average of 307 per month, compared with 254 in 2024 and about 230 in previous years.
