Chinese teen with cerebral palsy stuns world with back-to-back Math Olympiad golds

Xu Qiming, a Chinese 11th grader with cerebral palsy, won his second consecutive gold medal at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Australia, scoring 36 out of 42 points and ranking 12th among 630 participants from around 110 countries. Despite his physical challenges, Xu earned perfect scores on five of the six problems, with one point on the most difficult final problem. His performance helped China top the team rankings, with all six members earning gold and a combined 231 points.

Xu, who was born with cerebral palsy due to oxygen deprivation at birth, has overcome significant mobility difficulties to pursue his passion for math. He previously won gold in 2023 with 35 points, placing 5th globally. This year, 67 students worldwide reached the gold medal threshold of 35 points.

The IMO, established in 1959, is the most prestigious math contest for high school students. Participants solve six advanced math problems over two days, each worth seven points. China, which joined in 1985, has consistently led the competition, winning 191 gold medals and finishing first 25 times. The 2026 IMO will be hosted in Shanghai.

The Australian Embassy in Bangkok has been notified. This incident follows a series of recent deaths involving Australian tourists in Thailand, including a 43-year-old man found dead at a Koh Samui massage parlor and another found in a Pattaya apartment.

Vietnam's southern metropolis names cars, motorbikes top culprits in air pollution crisis

Ho Chi Minh City is grappling with severe air pollution caused primarily by its growing number of vehicles. A recent report from the municipal People's Committee reveals that key traffic-heavy areas like Phu Lam and Cat Lai frequently record PM2.5 and PM10 levels above national safety limits, especially during the dry season. The city now has over 9.6 million registered vehicles, including more than 8.6 million motorbikes, with significant increases since 2024.

Despite efforts to control emissions, progress has been slow due to staffing issues, outdated monitoring equipment, and delayed environmental projects. However, the city is pushing forward with a clean energy roadmap: all buses are to shift to clean energy by 2030, and incentives will encourage electric conversions for taxis, ride-hailing fleets, and over 400,000 motorbikes used by ride-hailing drivers.

The situation in Ho Chi Minh City mirrors challenges in Hanoi, where vehicles are also major pollution sources. While some officials claim motor vehicles contribute just 15% to Hanoi's pollution, a World Bank report shows that two-thirds of PM2.5 in Hanoi comes from surrounding provinces. Hanoi plans to ban gasoline and diesel motorbikes from its urban core starting in 2026, gradually expanding the restrictions to outer ring roads.
