How much does it cost to study semiconductor engineering in Vietnam?

Vietnam now offers semiconductor-related programs at 25 universities, with annual tuition fees ranging from VND18.5 million to VND94.8 million (US$7083,630). Most fall between VND23 million and VND41 million. The Military Technical Academy has the lowest fee, while FPT University charges the highestup to VND94.8 million in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with lower fees in regional campuses.

Programs cover fields such as microelectronics, microchip design, nanotechnology, and packaging. Notable institutions include Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam-Japan University, and the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi. Eight universities now require entrance scores of at least 24/30 in a math and science subject combination, with math alone needing at least 8/10.

To address the semiconductor workforce gap, Vietnam's government has approved a national strategy to train 50,000 professionals by 2030, expanding to 75 training programs in relevant fields like physics, mechanics, and computer science.

Malaysia continues beating Thailand to become Southeast Asia's tourism champion

From January to May 2025, Malaysia welcomed 16.9 million international tourists, surpassing Thailand's 16.61 million in the same period. Traditionally Southeast Asia's tourism leader, Thailand has fallen behind this year due to several setbacks, while Malaysia has emerged as a regional standout.

Malaysia's rise is attributed to its visa-free policies for Chinese (extended to 2036) and Indian tourists (until 2026), improved airport infrastructure, and effective marketing. Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminal 1 received a US$7 million upgrade to handle increased traffic. Malaysia has also enhanced airport security, denying entry to passengers from high-risk flights.

Meanwhile, Thailand's tourism has been negatively impacted by the kidnapping of Chinese actor Xing Xing, a deadly earthquake in March, and recent military clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, all of which have led to growing tourist concerns and booking cancellations, especially among Chinese visitors.

Taiwanese actress Alyssa Chia and her three daughters experienced a terrifying moment while vacationing in Waikiki, Hawaii, when a tsunami warning was issued following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The spice of Hue: origins of bun bo

Bún Huế, a spicy beef noodle soup from central Vietnam, is deeply rooted in tradition and history. According to 91-year-old culinary artisan Mai Thi Tra, it originated from spiritual village rituals, where leftover beef from ceremonial offerings was boiled and served with sticky rice. Over time, noodles replaced rice, evolving into the dish known today. Additions like pork knuckle, crab rolls, and blood jelly followed.

Van Cu Village, known for its high-quality noodles for over 400 years, played a key role in the dish's development. Traditionally, Hue women would cook and sell bún from baskets, making it an everyday staple.

The dish's defining feature is its rich, spicy broth made from simmered beef bones, lemongrass, and fermented shrimp paste (mắm ruốc), with chili oil adding its signature red hue. The broth is carefully skimmed for clarity and depth. Vietnamese food expert Ho Dac Thieu Anh stresses that the spice must come naturally from the ingredients, not sugar.

Hue locals cook it in round aluminum pots, which historian Tran Duc Anh Son says help enhance flavor. According to Eastern food philosophy, its ingredients promote circulation, detoxification, and digestion.

Interestingly, people in Hue simply call it "bún ." The full name, “bún Huế,” is used mostly by outsiders. Now an international dish, it remains a symbol of Hue's rich culinary legacy wherever it is served.

Flash floods, landslides leave 9 dead, 3 missing in northern Vietnam

Heavy rains from Thursday night to Friday morning caused deadly flash floods and landslides in Vietnam's northern Dien Bien and Son La provinces, killing at least nine people and leaving three missing. Dozens of villages were isolated, and hundreds of households had to be urgently evacuated as landslides buried homes and washed away roads.

In Dien Bien, multiple landslides struck Xa Dung Commune, where seven people were initially reported missing. In Tia Dinh Commune, landslides blocked roads and buried a house, killing two children. Muong Luan Commune is mobilizing emergency forces to evacuate residents, while Na Son Commune saw widespread flooding that submerged entire villages.

In neighboring Son La Province, five houses were swept away, 14 villages were cut off, and 70 families were relocated. Major highways and roads have been blocked by landslides, paralyzing regional traffic.

Meteorological reports predict more rain, with some areas expecting over 70mm of accumulation, worsening the risk of further floods and landslides.
