US scraps interview waiver for visa applicants

Starting September 2, the U.S. will require nearly all non-immigrant visa applicants, regardless of age, to attend in-person interviews. This marks a shift from the current policy, which exempts children under 14 and adults over 79.

Only a few exceptions will remain, including diplomatic and official visas, and renewals of full-validity tourist visas within 12 months of expirationprovided the applicant was at least 18 when the previous visa was issued. Consular officers will still have the discretion to require interviews. Additionally, foreign visitors will soon need to pay a visa integrity fee of at least US$250.

Charmaine Sheh calls Malaysia her 'second Hong Kong'

Hong Kong actress Charmaine Sheh recently praised Malaysia for its delicious food, beautiful scenery, and friendly atmosphere, calling it her "second Hong Kong." During her appearance at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on July 26 for a restaurant opening and fan event, Sheh shared that she had enjoyed a "non-stop culinary tour" since arriving on July 24, indulging in local dishes like durian, chicken rice, and satay. She humorously noted that she could finally eat freely after completing filming for the second season of Queen of News.

Sheh expressed interest in returning to Malaysia for future film and TV projects, having previously filmed scenes for The Heir to the Throne in the Klang Valley. Her current visit is also personal, as she's traveling with her mother and plans to spend several more days sightseeing.

A graduate of the International Hotel Management Institute in Switzerland and a 1997 Miss Hong Kong first runner-up, Sheh is best known for her roles in TVB dramas like War and Beauty, Beyond the Realm of Conscience, and Forensic Heroes.

Test Could Let You Check for Deadly Cancer at Home

Researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a new skin patch called the ExoPatch that could allow people to detect melanomathe deadliest form of skin cancerat home. The silicone patch uses star-shaped microneedles coated in a gel to collect exosomes (tiny cell-released particles) from just under the skin's surface, without causing pain or drawing blood. Once removed, the patch is placed in acid to release the exosomes into a solution. A test strip then shows one line for a negative result and two for a positive, similar to a test.

In lab tests using pig and mouse skin, ExoPatch successfully distinguished cancerous tissue, isolating significantly more melanoma-related exosomal proteins compared to healthy samples. If validated in clinical trials, it could become a fast, non-invasive way for individualsespecially those at higher riskto check for skin cancer without needing a biopsy.

While the device shows promise, experts urge caution. Consultant dermatologist Dr. Sophie Momen warns it might give false reassurance and shouldn't replace professional evaluations. Human trials are planned, and the technology could eventually be expanded to detect other solid-tumor cancers like lung or breast cancer.

Flash flood sweeps gold shop in China, locals scramble for $1M in jewelry

A flash flood on July 25 in Wuxi County, Shaanxi Province, triggered chaos after nearly 20 kilograms of gold and jewelry were swept from the Laofengxiang gold shop. The flood, rising over a meter high, washed away all display items and a safe with inventory and cash, causing losses estimated at over 10 million yuan (US$1.38 million). Only about one kilogram of jewelry was recovered, much of it returned by local residents.

With the store's security system down due to power and internet outages, the flood's aftermath sparked a gold rush as hundreds of people searched the areasome using metal detectors. The shop owner's son, Xiaoye, warned that keeping recovered jewelry without returning it is illegal and could lead to prosecution.

The flood was part of a broader weather crisis across northern and eastern China, with intense rainfall hitting regions including Beijing, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia. As of July 29, at least 30 people had died in Beijing alone, and over 80,000 were displaced. Widespread disruptions to transport, infrastructure, and communications have overwhelmed emergency services, with experts describing the capital as a raintrap.”
