12 Australian universities prioritized for student visas

Australia's Department of Home Affairs has announced that international students applying to 12 universities will have their visas processed faster in 2025, part of a strategy to ease pressure on the country's largest institutions and spread demand more evenly.

Swinburne University of Technology has the largest allocation with 4,523 international student places, followed by La Trobe University with 4,100. Edith Cowan University, Griffith University, and the University of Wollongong each receive 3,600, while other institutionsincluding Flinders, Victoria, James Cook, Tasmania, Southern Cross, New England, and the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ)—receive smaller caps. UniSQ has 50 priority places, with its remaining 950 processed at the standard pace.

Students at these universities will not have higher chances of visa approval, but their applications will be decided more quickly. Currently, the median processing time stands at 94 days for undergraduate and 171 days for vocational programs.

The change comes as Australia tightens student migration policies. Post-study work rights have been shortened, English requirements raised, proof-of-funds increased to AU$29,710, and visa application fees lifted to AU$2,000. These measures follow record international enrollments, with 1.1 million students in 2024, including over 33,000 from Vietnam.

Neighborhood near HCMC's Ben Thanh Market named one of world's coolest

Nguyen Thai Binh in downtown Ho Chi Minh City has been ranked 11th among the world's 39 coolest neighborhoods by British magazine Time Out. The editors highlighted its vibrant mix of hidden gems, from acclaimed restaurants and secret speakeasies tucked behind colonial facades to its bustling street life just minutes from Ben Thanh Market.

The neighborhood offers a diverse culinary journey: starting with crab and snail vermicelli soup at Phan Rang, browsing antiques on Le Cong Kieu Street, and exploring Dan Sinh Market, famous for military memorabilia and vintage goods. Visitors can enjoy family-style Vietnamese dishes at Bep Me In, admire art at the HCMC Museum of Fine Arts, dine at Quince Eatery with its wood-fired specialties, and end the night at The Arth bar.

Globally, Tokyo's Jimbocho topped the list, followed by Borgerhout in Antwerp and Barra Funda in Sao Paulo. Time Out compiled the rankings through nominations from its international network, weighing culture, community, nightlife, food, and liveability.

Trump invites international fans to World Cup and Olympics as US tightens visa policies

At the UN General Assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump invitedcountless people from all over the globeto attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while noting that the U.S. will celebrate its 250th Independence anniversary next year. Despite his call, inbound U.S. tourism has been falling, with overseas visits dropping 2.9% year-on-year in August 2025, marking the sixth monthly decline. This bucks global tourism trends and delays recovery to pre-pandemic levels of 79.4 million visitors annually.

The World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, has already attracted huge interest, with FIFA receiving 1.5 million ticket applications from 210 countries in just 24 hours. Demand is strongest in the host nations, followed by Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil. However, travel challenges loom: fans from non-visa waiver countries must pay a new $250visa integrity feeand face long waits averaging 169 days for tourist visa interviews. These hurdles could impact attendance from major football nations such as Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.

Meanwhile, tourists from visa-waiver countries, largely in Europe, avoid the fee but remain cautious due to stricter U.S. border enforcement. The White House is also proposing tighter visa durations for students, exchange visitors, and media personnel. The 48-team World Cup will feature 104 matches in 16 host cities, while Los Angeles prepares to stage the 2028 Summer Olympics.
