Abandoned Boeing at Vietnamese airport finds new life as student training tool

A Boeing 727-200 abandoned at Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport since 2007 will be repurposed as a hands-on training tool for aviation students. The Vietnam Aviation Academy plans to move the aircraft to its Cam Ranh campus in Khanh Hoa Province, following a proposal by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) to the Ministry of Construction.

The dismantling, transport, and reassembly will cost an estimated VND8.79.6 billion ($340,000–$380,000), significantly cheaper than importing a new training aircraft, which would cost around VND500 billion. Though no longer flight-worthy, the plane retains key components like its frame, cockpit, engines, landing gear, and seatssufficient for training in aircraft maintenance, security, operations, and air traffic control.

The academy has committed to funding the project through tuition and sponsorships without state budget support. Originally owned by Cambodia's Royal Khmer Airlines, the aircraft was parked in 2007 and declared abandoned after the airline's license was revoked in 2014. Authorities had considered auctioning it, but due to its poor condition, opted instead to convert it into educational equipment.

Mandopop icon Jay Chou gained over 11 million followers on Douyin (China's TikTok) within a single day of launching his account, “Classmate Chou,” on July 9. Despite posting no content, his follower count surged from 160,000 to over 1 million in just 30 minutes and continued climbing rapidly, reflecting his massive popularity.

The frenzy around Chou's Douyin debut led to a significant rise in the stock price of Star Plus Legend, a company co-founded by his mother, Yeh Hui-mei. Its shares soared over 160% on July 9, briefly reaching HK$17 before closing at HK$12.44. Although rumors suggested Douyin paid Chou a nine-figure sum to join the platform, Douyin has denied this.

How to avoid deportation on Asia's most beautiful island

Bali authorities are cracking down on inappropriate behavior by foreign tourists through stricter rules and penalties, including swift deportation for those who commit crimes or violate local customs. Komang Nova Sewi Putra, deputy chairman of Bali's legislative council, advocates for immediate deportation of unruly visitors to protect the island's safety and reputation.

The newly enforced regulations require tourists to wear respectful clothing and act courteously in public, especially at religious sites. Behaviors such as swearing, causing disturbances, being rude to locals, spreading misinformation online, or using hate speech are now prohibited. Other banned actions include entering temples without permission or proper attire, climbing sacred structures, working without a valid permit, and using single-use plastics.

Specific cultural rules are also enforced, such as prohibiting menstruating women from entering sacred temple areas in accordance with Balinese customs. Tourists must also pay the mandatory tourist levy, or they risk being denied entry to attractions.

These measures come as Bali continues to gain global recognition for its beauty, recently named Asia's most beautiful island by both DestinAsian and Condé Nast Traveler. With tourism exceeding pre-pandemic levels6.3 million foreign visitors in 2024 and a target of 6.5 million for 2025the government aims to preserve Bali's cultural integrity and appeal by enforcing respectful and lawful visitor behavior.

Nearly Half of Gen Z Get Health Advice From Social Media, Not Real Doctors

A global Edelman survey reveals that 45% of young adults (ages 1834) trust health advice from friends and family more than from doctors, and 38% prefer advice from social media. This shift reflects growing skepticism toward medical institutions and a stronger reliance on peer opinions, especially from influencers without medical training. One-third of Gen Z say they've made personal health decisions based on influencer advice, a rate twice as high as older generations.

Doctors like Dr. Charles Carlsen and Dr. Olalekan Otulana report a noticeable rise in patients arriving with self-diagnoses or strong views shaped by TikTok or Instagram. Although some social media stories, like a TikTok video prompting a cancer diagnosis, show potential benefits, physicians warn of serious risks, such as delayed treatment and drug misuse due to misinformation.

Mental health is another area heavily influenced by platforms like TikTok, with increased self-suspicions of ADHD and autism prompting referrals. Still, most concerns go unconfirmed or unaddressed by professionals.

Medical professionals acknowledge that social media is not going away and stress the importance of meeting patients on these platforms, fostering trust, and encouraging critical thinking. While peer support can be valuable, doctors urge caution and emphasize that evidence-based medicine remains essential, especially for serious conditions. As Dr. Carlsen put it: “Keep Googling, but for life-and-death issues, at least, consult with someone who went to med school.”
