World's second most popular destination expects tourism slowdown in summer sales

Spain's tourism industry is bracing for a slowdown in summer sales growth due to global uncertainty, especially surrounding U.S. tariff negotiations, according to industry group Exceltur. Although the country is still expected to hit record tourist numbers, third-quarter tourism revenues are forecast to grow only 2.7% year-on-yearsharply down from 6.3% in the same period of 2024. Sales in Q2 had risen 4.5%.

Exceltur predicts fewer visitors from Germany and France, while arrivals from the UK, U.S., Japan, and China will still rise but at a slower pace. A weaker dollar and global economic concerns have already curbed travel from the U.S. since late 2024, and exchange rate shifts are expected to continue weighing on American tourism. Meanwhile, more Europeans are vacationing within Europe, and Asian tourists are choosing destinations other than the U.S.

The group cut its full-year tourism growth forecast from 4% to 3.3%, though this still outpaces the Spanish economy's expected 2.4% growth. Vice President Óscar Perelli noted that industry optimism has been tempered by increasing uncertainty.

Despite the slowdown, the World Travel and Tourism Council forecasts Spain will welcome a record 100 million visitors in 2025. Tourism is projected to contribute 13.2% to Spain's GDP this year. In 2024, Spain was the world's second most visited country after France, attracting a record 94 million international tourists.

Australian tourist dies at massage parlor in Thailand

A 43-year-old Australian man was found dead at a massage parlor on Thailand's Koh Samui island early Monday morning. He had arrived alone shortly after midnight on July 7 and paid 400 baht (around US$12) for a one-hour traditional oil massage. After the session, he asked to rest on the bed. A staff member later heard him snoring and did not disturb him.

She reported continued snoring at 4 a.m., but when she tried to wake him at around 6:20 a.m., he was unresponsive. Emergency services were called, but he was confirmed dead at the scene. Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. Preliminary reports suggest the man, identified as Christopher, was visiting Thailand with his wife but went to the massage parlor alone from nearby accommodation.

Common Virus Found To Increase Cancer Risk

A new study from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has found that individuals with antibodies to the EpsteinBarr virus (EBV), specifically VCA-IgA, may have a higher risk of developing certain cancers. EBV infects about 95% of people globally and often remains latent after initial infection, which typically causes mononucleosis.

The IARC tracked nearly 74,000 adults in Southern China over 810 years and found that those positive for EBV VCA-IgA antibodies were significantly more likely to develop cancersmost notably nasopharyngeal carcinoma (26 times higher risk), as well as elevated risks for lung, liver, and lymphoma cancers. These risks persisted even up to a decade before diagnosis, suggesting a long-term cancer-promoting role of EBV reactivation.

Experts note that while EBV is already classified as a carcinogen, this study links cancer risk specifically to viral reactivation. Researchers suggest that antiviral or vaccine strategies could reduce these risks by suppressing EBV activity. However, they also emphasize that the vast majority of EBV-infected individuals never develop cancer or autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. Environmental, geographic, and socioeconomic factors may influence outcomes, making the results less directly applicable to populations outside the studied region.

9 health benefits of eating avocados regularly

Avocados are nutrient-rich fruits known for their high content of healthy fats and fiber, making them beneficial for heart health, weight control, and skin care. According to Dr. Tran Thi Tra Phuong of K National Center Hospital, avocado nutrients and oils are widely used in both health and beauty products.

Avocado oil contains 71% monounsaturated fats, 13% polyunsaturated fats, and 16% saturated fats. The fruit also offers a blend of 70% insoluble and 30% soluble fiber. Regular avocado consumption provides nine key health benefits: it improves heart health by lowering bad cholesterol, supports brain function and reduces the risk of cognitive decline, enhances eyesight due to antioxidants like lutein, and strengthens bones with vitamin K and carotenoids.

Avocados also aid in muscle recovery post-workout due to their potassium content and support skin repair with omega-3 and vitamin E. They promote hair growth by nourishing hair strands with unsaturated oils and essential nutrients. Additionally, avocados help with weight management by boosting satiety and regulating appetite. Lastly, they strengthen immunity through antioxidants and vitamins C, B6, and E, which help combat oxidative stress and aging.

Incorporating avocados into a daily diet offers wide-ranging health and beauty benefits.
