Vietnamese rank 3rd in Southeast Asia in online learning on Coursera

Around 1.8 million Vietnamese are studying on Coursera as of June 2025, marking a 22% increase from last year. Popular subjects include data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and Chinese. CEO Greg Hart revealed that every four minutes, a Vietnamese learner enrolls in a generative AI course, aligning with the global trend favoring machine learning and programming.

Vietnam ranks third in Southeast Asia for Coursera users, behind the Philippines (2.8 million) and Indonesia (2.1 million). Among the 1.8 million Vietnamese users, 152,000 have joined over 800 AI-related coursesfour times more than last year. The average Vietnamese Coursera learner is 30 years old, younger than the global average of 34.

Learners in Vietnam are taking courses from top U.S. universities and tech companies like Stanford, Michigan, Google, and IBM. Coursera partners with five Vietnamese universities and offers over 3,000 courses in Vietnamese, with some integrated into formal academic programs. For instance, FPT University has incorporated more than 80 Coursera courses into its bachelor's programs.

Similarly, Khan Academy reported two million Vietnamese accounts this year, ranking Vietnam second globally in user numbers, behind Brazil.

World's second most beautiful island witnesses 77% increase in foreign visitors

Phu Quoc, recently ranked the world's second most beautiful island by Travel + Leisure, saw international arrivals surge by nearly 77% in the first half of 2025. The island welcomed around 4.5 million visitors, a 33.3% year-on-year increase, achieving over 61% of its annual tourism goal. Nearly 900,000 of those visitors were from overseas.

Tourism revenue rose sharply to approximately VND21.5 trillion (US$823 million), up 92.6% compared to the same period last year. The increase is largely attributed to expanded air connectivity, with June seeing over 20 international flights dailydouble the number from last year.

New routes and increased frequencies from key markets have boosted accessibility. Hong Kong's Greater Bay Airlines launched thrice-weekly flights to Phu Quoc in July, while Hong Kong Express raised its frequency to 23 flights daily. Flights from South Korea have also increased to 78 per day, highlighting strong demand from Northeast Asia.

Aviation authorities order investigation after tourist claims she paid $8 for banh mi at Hanoi airport

Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV) is investigating after a tourist complained on Facebook about paying VND208,000 (US$7.96) for a loaf of banh mi at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airportmore than four times the typical price. The tourist compared it to much cheaper food options at other Asian airports, where similar bread costs VND40,00050,000.

In response, CAAV instructed Noi Bai Airport to work with the Northern Airports Authority to verify the incident and take action if necessary to uphold service quality and protect passengers' rights.

Banh mi, a staple of Vietnamese cuisine, usually sells for VND15,00030,000 at local stalls. The alleged overpricing has sparked public concern, especially given banh mi's status as a globally celebrated, affordable street food.

Google Maps enable nostalgic trip down memory lane with photos from the past

After checking Google Maps' Street View, 30-year-old Mau Hung from Lam Dong was stunned to see his late father sitting in their yard, triggering an emotional breakdown. His father, who passed away earlier this year, appeared in older images from 2018 and 2019, prompting Hung to reflect on years spent away from home. The emotional moment made him consider leaving his job to care for his mother, now alone.

Hung's experience is part of a viral Vietnamese trend calledreturning to childhood through Google Maps,” with over 40,000 social media posts. People are rediscovering lost loved ones, past village scenes, and childhood memories via Street View's archive of 360-degree street images. University student Tran Huy Hieu also found images of his family drying rice and glimpses of his younger self with his first love, reinforcing his connection to home.

Psychologist Tran Thanh Nam describes the trend as a digitaltime machinethat offers comfort and emotional healing. By visually revisiting places from the past, people reconnect with their roots and loved ones, fulfilling a deep psychological need for nostalgia and belonging.

Over 200 kids poisoned by lead in kindergarten meals in China, principal arrested

More than 200 children at Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, northwestern China, have fallen ill with suspected lead poisoning from contaminated date cakes and corn rolls. Blood tests revealed abnormal lead levels in 233 children, with 201 receiving hospital treatment. The tainted foods, served at the school, were found to contain over 2,000 times the legal limit of lead, with readings of 1,052 mg/kg in the date cake and 1,340 mg/kg in the corn roll, far exceeding the national limit of 0.5 mg/kg.

State media reported that kitchen staff had used inedible yellow paint pigmentpurchased online and containing leadto color the food. Security footage confirmed its use in flour mixes for the meals. The kindergarten's principal (surnamed Zhu), an investor (surnamed Li), and six others have been detained. Two additional individuals are out on bail pending trial.

While other kindergartens linked to Peixin showed no signs of contamination, the case has reignited concerns over food safety in China. Though standards have improved since high-profile scandals like the 2008 tainted milk crisis, public outrage continues, especially after recent revelations about cooking oil transported in fuel containers.
