Number of students studying abroad triples, expected to reach 9 million by 2030

The number of students pursuing higher education abroad has more than tripled globally, rising from 2.1 million in 2000 to nearly 6.9 million in 2022, according to UNESCO. These students now make up 2.7% of all global higher education enrollments, up from 2.1% in 2000. Europe and North America remain the most popular destinations, hosting over 4 million students.

Overall global enrollment in higher education has surged to 264 million by 20232.5 times higher than in 2000. The global gross enrollment ratio (GER) doubled from 19% in 2000 to 43% in 2023, though regional disparities persist. Europe and North America lead with a GER of 79%, while Sub-Saharan Africa lags behind at just 9%.

Women now outnumber men in higher education globally, with 113 women enrolled for every 100 men in 2023. This marks a significant shift from gender parity in 2000.

UNESCO forecasts that international student numbers could rise to 9 million by 2030, driven by increasing global demand and greater mobility opportunities.

Ho Chi Minh City to ban mobile phones in schools, even at recess

Ho Chi Minh City plans to ban students from using mobile phones at school, including during breaks, starting in the 20252026 academic year. The goal is to help students focus better in class and build stronger social connections. Schools will be encouraged to provide activities during break times such as sports and group games.

Nguyen Van Hieu, the city's education director, announced the policy on July 7. Some schools, like the High School for the Gifted, have already adopted similar rules, reporting that students became more engaged and interactive after the ban.

A 2024 VnExpress survey showed 83% public support for banning phones at school. International research by UNESCO in 2023 also found that smartphones significantly distract students, reduce learning efficiency, and impact emotional well-being. Other countries, including France and Denmark, have also imposed stricter phone-use policies in schools.

Currently, Vietnam's national policy permits limited phone use in class with teacher approval and does not restrict usage during breaks. Ho Chi Minh City's upcoming change would tighten those rules locally.

US scraps shoe removal at airport screening

As of July 8, passengers at U.S. airports will no longer be required to remove their shoes at security checkpoints, ending a two-decade-old TSA policy. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the change at Washington's Reagan National Airport, citing major advances in security technology and a more sophisticated, multi-layered approach to national security.

The shoe-removal rule began in 2006, following the 2001 attempted bombing by Richard Reid, who tried to ignite explosives hidden in his shoes on a transatlantic flight. Reid is now serving a life sentence. Despite ending this requirement, the TSA emphasized that other security protocolslike identity verification and vettingwill remain in place.

The announcement reflects broader efforts to modernize air travel while maintaining safety. Similar security measures, such as liquid restrictions and electronics screening, remain in effect due to past terror threats, including the 2006 foiled plot involving liquid explosives.

Nutella's parent company Ferrero is buying cereal maker WK Kellogg for $3.1 billion

Ferrero Group, known for Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, is acquiring WK Kellogg Co for $3.1 billion in its largest deal to date. WK Kellogg shares soared over 30% following the announcement. The cereal company, spun off from Kellogg in 2022, brings iconic brands like Raisin Bran and Corn Flakes, 14,000 employees, and 22 plants under Ferrero's wing. Ferrero plans to invest and expand Kellogg's presence beyond cereal to adapt to changing consumer trends and price sensitivity.

CEO Gary Pilnick called the acquisition a chance to grow Kellogg's brands with more flexibility and resources. Ferrero has recently expanded its U.S. footprint by acquiring Nestlé's U.S. candy business and Blue Bunny ice cream. Analysts view the deal as a strategic move amid increasing consolidation in the food and beverage industry, as companies seek scale and category diversity to stay competitive.

Hanoi truck overturns, passersby loot 4 tons of lychees

On Saturday night, Lich, 38, was transporting four tons of lychees from Hanoi to Phu Tho when her truck overturned in Dan Hoa Commune, spilling the fruit across the road. After towing the vehicle for repairs, Lich returned around 4 a.m. Sunday to find dozens of people taking the lychees. Though she and her husband tried to stop them, they were ignored and left the scene, accepting the loss.

A bystander captured the incident on video, which sparked public outrage on social media. While many condemned the actions as theft, some argued the fruit may have appeared abandoned. Local authorities said they weren't informed of the accident but acknowledged that some people continued collecting the lychees despite Lich's objections. The police have been instructed to investigate.

Lich estimated the loss at around VND28 million (US$1,072). After the story gained attention online, some who had taken the fruit apologized and offered compensation. By Monday, Lich had received over VND9 million in donations from sympathizers and those wishing to make amends.
