Homeless at 12, Filipino man defies all odds to graduate from top university

At age 12, Eugene Dela Cruz was homeless, sleeping under tricycles and begging for food on the streets of Manila after his parents divorced and abandoned him. He survived by bathing in public restrooms and enduring harsh living conditions. Four years later, a charity helped him return to school, and he excelled academically, eventually finishing vocational high school in 2021.

Eugene then applied to Ateneo de Manila University - one of the Philippines' top institutions - and was accepted with financial aid. While studying, he worked as a tutor and choreographer to support himself. On June 21, at age 25, he graduated with a degree in Economics, majoring in Financial Economics, and earned third prize for his thesis.

His inspiring story has gone viral in the Philippines, with many praising his resilience and determination. In his thesis dedication, Eugene encouraged others facing hardship: “You possess a strength no hardship can steal... straight to this very moment.”

Hong Kong actress Kelly Fu enjoys 12 durians during her first visit to Malaysia

A self-professed fan of spicy food, she purchased jars of sambal as souvenirs and humorously remarked, “I ate so much I grew a size.”

Malaysia is well-known for its durian season, especially the prized Musang King variety, with all-you-can-eat buffets popular during peak months from June to September. Fu, 40, is known for her roles in Infernal Affairs II, Fairy Tale Killer, and Love Is the Only Answer.

Dementia Life Expectancy Is Now Longer Than Ever

A new international study analyzing data from over 1.2 million people aged 60 and older shows that individuals diagnosed with dementia are now living longer than before. This improvement is attributed to earlier detection, better treatments, and more personalized care approaches.

Led by Professor Hao Luo of the University of Waterloo, the research used data from 2000 to 2018 across eight regions: Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Ontario (Canada), South Korea, Taiwan, and the UK.

In five of these areas - including Canada, South Korea, and the UK - mortality rates following a dementia diagnosis have declined. However, New Zealand showed rising death rates from 20142018, likely due to a policy shift transferring dementia care from specialists to primary care. As a result, patients may have been diagnosed later in their disease progression.

The study highlights the value of national dementia strategies and suggests that understanding how other medical conditions interact with dementia could improve future care. Luo plans to explore how comorbidities affect survival rates in dementia patients in her next research phase.

What did Lamborghini say after Liverpool star Diogo Jota's fatal crash in a Huracán?

Lamborghini has issued a statement expressing condolences after the fatal crash that killed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in northern Spain, reportedly while driving a Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder. The company said it was "saddened" by the incident and is awaiting further details while respecting those involved.

The Huracán model, which can reach speeds of 325 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds, is one of Lamborghini's most successful, with over 25,000 units sold globally between 2014 and 2024. However, the car has faced previous safety recalls, including a September 2024 recall in the U.S. due to faulty crash protection brackets and a November 2023 recall of over 7,800 vehicles for failing to meet federal safety standards.

Authorities in Zamora, Spain, are investigating the accident as a possible speeding incident. Investigators from the Civil Guard are analyzing physical evidence, including skid marks, to determine the vehicle's speed at the time of the crash.

Jota's death has stunned the football community. He was just 28 and had recently married his longtime partner and mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso, on June 22less than two weeks before the tragedy.
